Embryo, Sperm, and Egg Transport in and to the UAE: A Step-by-Step Guide for Intended Parents with Cryo Medical Logistics

TL;DR

  • Since a 2023 amendment to Federal Law No. 7 of 2019, importing and exporting sperm and egg samples to and from the UAE is legally permitted.

  • Donor eggs and donor sperm remain prohibited — UAE treatment must use the couple's own genetic material only.

  • Standard shipping time to or from Dubai and Abu Dhabi is typically 24–72 hours depending on destination, and every shipment is fully insured.

  • Cryo Medical Logistics hand-carries your embryos, sperm, or eggs personally — no cargo handling, no X-ray exposure, and a biomedical specialist with your samples at every step — making us the leading specialist courier for intended parents moving reproductive material to, from, or within the UAE.

This guide is organized around the questions intended parents actually ask us before booking. Jump to the section you need, or read straight through for the full picture.

Why Cryo Medical Logistics Leads in the UAE

Cryo Medical Logistics is an ISO 9001:2015 certified specialist hand-carry cryogenic courier, operating across 80+ countries with an established presence coordinating shipments into and out of Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Where general cargo and freight providers treat reproductive material like any other biological shipment, we don't: every UAE shipment is personally hand-carried door-to-door by a trained courier, never checked in as cargo, never exposed to X-ray, and fully insured throughout transit. Combined with direct, hands-on coordination with both your origin and destination clinics on the UAE's specific documentation requirements — marriage certificates, attested parentage declarations, and emirate-level variations —

this is the level of specialist handling and corridor experience that positions Cryo Medical Logistics as the leading choice for intended parents moving reproductive material to, from, or within the UAE.

Can I import or export embryos, sperm, or eggs to and from the UAE?

Yes. Prior to 2023, moving these materials across the UAE's border was restricted. A significant amendment to Federal Law No. 7 of 2019 on Medically Assisted Reproduction removed that restriction, opening the door to international treatment coordination — shipping your own frozen material to or from a UAE clinic is now legally permitted, subject to your specific clinic's documentation requirements.

This reflects the legal position as understood at the time of writing and is not legal advice. Confirm current requirements with your clinic and, where needed, a qualified attorney.

Can donor eggs or sperm be used for treatment in the UAE?

No. This is one of the most consistent rules across UAE fertility law: treatment must use the couple's own genetic material. Donor eggs, donor sperm, and donor embryos all remain prohibited, regardless of the 2023 reforms that loosened other restrictions. If your treatment plan involves donor material, you'll need to look at a different jurisdiction for that portion of your journey.

Do I need to be married to ship reproductive material to or from the UAE?

It depends on religion, not just marital status. Muslim couples must provide a valid, continuing marriage certificate. Unmarried non-Muslim couples can still access treatment, but must instead submit a formal declaration specifying which partner will establish the child's parentage, attested by the relevant authority in their home country. Individual emirates can also introduce their own local variations on top of the federal baseline, so it's worth confirming the exact requirement with your specific destination clinic.

Is surrogacy legal in the UAE?

This one doesn't have a clean yes-or-no answer yet. The 2023 amendment removed the law's previous explicit prohibition on certain third-party reproductive arrangements, and some legal commentators read that as opening the door to emirate-level surrogacy regulation. But there is no comprehensive national surrogacy framework in place, and practice varies by emirate and by clinic. If surrogacy is part of your plan, confirm the current position directly with your destination clinic and a qualified local lawyer before committing to anything — this is not a detail to assume your way through.

How long does embryo, sperm, or egg shipping take to or from the UAE?

Typical transit is 24–72 hours depending on your specific origin and destination, thanks in large part to the UAE's position as one of the best-connected long-haul air hubs in the world — Dubai and Abu Dhabi both offer frequent direct routes to Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Fewer connections mean fewer handling points and less risk to your shipment's temperature integrity over the journey.

Is the shipment insured?

Yes. You can chose one of our insurance methods.

Will my shipment go through airport X-ray screening?

No. We operate a strict Do Not X-Ray protocol on every cryogenic shipment. Your samples never pass through airport X-ray scanners — we use manual and alternative screening procedures at every checkpoint instead, and a trained courier stays with your samples in person for the entire journey rather than checking them in as cargo.

Why use a specialist courier instead of standard medical cargo or freight?

Cargo and freight shipping routes your samples through general handling systems — which can mean X-ray exposure, unsupervised transit time, and less control over exactly how and when your samples move. A specialist hand-carry courier keeps your samples personally supervised door-to-door, avoids X-ray entirely, and gives you a single point of contact managing documentation with both your origin and destination clinics throughout.

What documentation do I need?

  • Passport/ID for the intended parent(s)

  • Marriage certificate (Muslim couples) or attested parentage declaration (unmarried non-Muslim couples)

  • Consent forms from the origin clinic

  • Consent forms from the destination clinic

  • Storage/ownership confirmation for the material being shipped

  • Any additional documentation required by the specific emirate or clinic involved

Requirements can vary by emirate and by clinic, so we confirm your exact checklist once we know your origin, destination, and material type.

What does the process actually look like, step by step?

  1. Clinic verification and eligibility check — your origin and destination clinics confirm eligibility under UAE rules, including marital status documentation or the attested parentage declaration.

  2. Documentation and consent — we assemble the required paperwork with both clinics: consent forms, chain-of-custody documentation, and any marriage certificate or parentage declaration needed.

  3. Cryogenic packaging — your samples are loaded into a validated dry shipper, maintaining -196°C throughout the journey.

  4. Hand-carry transport — a trained courier personally accompanies your shipment door-to-door under our Do Not X-Ray protocol.

  5. Delivery and clinic handover — your shipment is delivered directly to your destination clinic or storage facility, with a signed chain-of-custody record confirming receipt.

We don't disclose the specific technical details of our packaging and handling protocols publicly — these are shared directly with clients and partner clinics as part of the booking process.
