If you are searching for embryo shipping to Ghana, sperm transport from Accra, egg courier services in Kumasi, or specialist cryogenic logistics between Ghana and any country in the world — you have found the right provider.

Cryo Medical Logistics (CML) is the leading specialist in cryogenic hand-carry reproductive material transport, ISO 9001:2015 certified, with active routes to and from Accra, Kumasi, Tema, Takoradi, Tamale, Sunyani, Cape Coast, and clinics across Ghana. We operate in 80+ countries — and Ghana is one of our most established and deeply understood African corridors.

Our dedicated Medical Logistics Technicians personally accompany every shipment from collection at the origin clinic to handover at the destination — no freight networks, no automated hubs, no anonymous cargo holds. Just a qualified specialist, travelling with your specimens, every step of the way.

Ghana's fertility sector is growing rapidly. From the internationally connected clinics of Accra's Airport Residential and Labone districts to the emerging fertility centres of Kumasi and Tema, more Ghanaian patients — and patients worldwide seeking treatment in Ghana — need a logistics partner that genuinely understands this country, its regulatory landscape, and the Ghana FDA's requirements for importing and exporting biological specimens. That partner is CML.

Why Cryo Medical Logistics Is the Trusted Choice for Ghana

Hand-Carry — The Only True Gold Standard

Most cryogenic shipping services package your embryos, eggs, or sperm into a dry shipper and pass them to a commercial freight operator. Your specimens then travel through automated sorting hubs, belly-hold cargo, and multi-stop logistics chains — without a qualified human being present for hours or sometimes days at a time.

CML operates on a fundamentally different model. Every shipment is hand-carried by a dedicated Medical Logistics Technician who personally accompanies the dewar from collection to delivery. There are no handovers to freight networks. There is no unaccompanied cargo. Chain of custody is unbroken from the moment the dewar leaves the clinic.

Africa-First Expertise

Ghana is not a peripheral market for CML. It is one of our home corridors. With our Lagos office operating across West Africa, our team has on-the-ground relationships, operational experience, and regulatory knowledge that no provider based exclusively outside Africa can offer.

Key Areas We Serve in Ghana

Accra — Ghana's Fertility Capital

Accra is home to the majority of Ghana's established fertility clinics, including facilities in the Airport Residential Area, Labone, East Legon, Adabraka, Cantonments, Osu, and Haatso. The city's internationally connected patient base — diaspora returnees, medical tourists from the UK, US, and Europe, and local patients pursuing advanced reproductive medicine — creates consistent demand for specialist international reproductive logistics.

CML coordinates collections and deliveries at fertility clinics, IVF centres, and hospital-based reproductive medicine units across Accra. We work within each clinic's own chain-of-custody procedures and liaise directly with embryology and andrology teams.

Tema — Industrial Capital and Logistics Gateway

Located 25 kilometres east of Accra, Tema is Ghana's primary port city and a critical logistics hub. Tema is also home to fertility clinics and specialist medical facilities serving its large professional population. CML's familiarity with Tema's logistics infrastructure — and its proximity to Kotoka International Airport — makes Tema-based collections and deliveries straightforward. The Ghana FDA maintains offices at FDA Heights, Tema, which CML works with directly for import/export documentation.

Kumasi — Ashanti Regional Centre

Kumasi is Ghana's second-largest city and the capital of the Ashanti Region, with a growing number of fertility clinics and reproductive health providers serving the region's large population. Patients in Kumasi seeking international embryo transport, donor egg importation, or cross-border IVF logistics have historically been underserved by specialist couriers. CML provides the same quality of service in Kumasi as in Accra — same protocols, same Medical Logistics Technician standard, same documentation rigour.

Takoradi (Sekondi-Takoradi) — Western Region Hub

Takoradi is Ghana's third-largest metropolitan area and the capital of the Western Region. CML serves fertility clinics and reproductive medicine providers in Takoradi, coordinating international specimen transport with the same end-to-end standard as our Accra operations.

Tamale — Northern Region

Tamale is the largest city in northern Ghana and a growing medical hub for the region. CML provides reproductive material transport services for clinics and patients in the Northern Region, coordinating road and air logistics from Tamale to Kotoka International Airport for onward international shipment.

Cape Coast — Central Region

Cape Coast, home of the University of Cape Coast and a growing healthcare infrastructure, is served by CML for both clinic-to-clinic domestic transfers and international shipments.

Sunyani — Bono Region

CML extends its Ghana network to Sunyani and the Bono Region for patients and clinics requiring domestic transfer coordination or international reproductive logistics.

Ghana and the West Africa Fertility Landscape

Ghana has established itself as one of West Africa's most important fertility medicine destinations. IVF services are available in Accra at internationally connected clinics offering IVF, ICSI, IUI, egg donation, sperm donation, and preimplantation genetic testing (PGT). Costs are competitive compared to Europe and North America, and the country's political stability, English-language healthcare system, and well-developed aviation infrastructure make it accessible for diaspora and medical tourism patients.

For patients travelling from the UK, USA, Europe, or elsewhere in Africa for fertility treatment in Ghana — or for Ghanaian patients sending specimens abroad or importing donor material from overseas — CML provides the only truly reliable specialist logistics infrastructure for this corridor.

Ghana is also a critical node in CML's broader West Africa reproductive logistics network, which includes Nigeria (Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt), Ivory Coast (Abidjan), Senegal (Dakar), Cameroon (Douala, Yaoundé), and beyond.

How the CML Transport Process Works for Ghana

Step 1 — Contact and Route Assessment Reach CML with the sending clinic, destination clinic or country, specimen type (embryos/sperm/eggs), and preferred transport date. We assess the Ghana FDA requirements, confirm feasibility, and provide a written quotation within one business day.

Step 2 — Documentation and Pre-Clearance CML prepares and manages the full documentation package: biological substance export/import declarations, Ghana FDA pre-clearance documentation, IATA PI 650 transport paperwork, clinic-to-clinic authorisation letters, and any destination-country-specific regulatory documents (e.g. HFEA licence for UK-bound transfers, FDA biomaterial import screening for US-bound shipments). Documents are submitted and confirmed before any collection is booked.

Step 3 — Specimen Collection Your Medical Logistics Technician collects the dry shipper dewar from the origin clinic at the agreed time. Specimens are verified against clinic records, packaged to IATA PI 650, sealed, and labelled with complete patient and specimen identification.

Step 4 — Supervised Hand-Carry The Technician accompanies the dewar throughout the entire journey — by road to Kotoka International Airport (or origin airport), through security ( no X-ray exposure), and on the flight. The dewar is never placed in checked luggage or cargo. It remains under direct human supervision at all times.

Step 5 — Formal Handover and Transport Report At the receiving clinic, the Technician completes a documented handover with embryology staff, confirming chain-of-custody records and specimen condition. A full transport report is issued to both clinics and to the patient.

Frequently Asked Questions: Embryo, Sperm & Egg Shipping To and From Ghana

Can frozen embryos be shipped internationally to or from Ghana?

Yes. Frozen embryos can be shipped internationally to and from Ghana, provided the correct Ghana FDA export/import documentation, clinic authorisations, and customs pre-clearance are in place. CML works directly with IVF clinics and fertility centres in Ghana to prepare and manage all compliance requirements before any shipment is booked. We do not take a booking we cannot complete safely and compliantly.

How are sperm, eggs, and embryos shipped to and from Ghana?

Shipping reproductive specimens to and from Ghana requires a specialist temperature-controlled hand-carry service operated by a dedicated Medical Logistics Technician. CML uses certified dry shipper dewars that maintain constant cryogenic temperatures below -150°C throughout the entire journey — no electricity required, no liquid nitrogen replenishment needed. The Technician personally accompanies the dewar from the origin clinic to the receiving clinic, managing security screening (manual inspection — no X-ray), customs clearance, and handover. There is no unaccompanied freight involved at any point.

Is this service door-to-door?

Yes. CML's Medical Logistics Technicians collect directly from the fertility clinic or storage facility — whether in Accra, Kumasi, Tema, Takoradi, or any other Ghanaian city — and personally hand-deliver to the receiving clinic worldwide. No third-party handling is involved between collection and delivery. This is a true door-to-door, hand-carry service.

Do you manage customs and paperwork for Ghana shipments?

Yes, entirely. CML manages all Ghana FDA pre-clearance documentation, biological substance import/export declarations, IATA PI 650 transport paperwork, packing lists specifying sample quantity and equipment details, and any origin-country-specific regulatory documents. We submit documentation in advance to the Ghana FDA Head Office in Accra or the regional office in Tema as required, and confirm clearance before the shipment departs. Customs failure is one of the most common — and most devastating — risks in Ghana reproductive logistics. CML eliminates it through documentation rigour and pre-clearance.

Is it safe to ship frozen embryos, eggs, or sperm to or from Ghana?

Yes — when handled by a specialist provider, shipping cryopreserved reproductive specimens is safe and does not negatively affect viability or pregnancy potential. Specimens maintained at cryogenic temperatures below -150°C in validated dry shipper dewars retain the same developmental potential as specimens that have never been transported. The risk lies not in the journey itself, but in using an inexperienced provider without Ghana-specific regulatory knowledge, proper equipment, or hand-carry protocols. CML's model removes that risk entirely.

What are the risks of using the wrong courier for Ghana?

The risks are serious and documented. Non-specialist couriers handling Ghana reproductive logistics have subjected specimens to airport X-ray scanners — which can cause genetic damage — failed to complete Ghana FDA pre-clearance documentation, and had specimens detained at Kotoka International Airport customs for days, exposing them to temperature risk. In some cases, specimens have thawed or been rendered unusable. These are real events, not hypothetical concerns. Using a specialist provider like CML — with Ghana-specific regulatory expertise, trained Medical Logistics Technicians, and pre-clearance procedures — is not optional. It is the only responsible choice.

Does airport X-ray security damage embryos or sperm?

This is a critical concern for Ghana shipments specifically. Airport X-ray exposure can potentially harm genetic material in reproductive specimens. CML's Medical Logistics Technicians are trained to request manual security inspection at all checkpoints, ensuring the dewar is never passed through an X-ray scanner. This is standard operating procedure on every CML transport — and it is one of the most important reasons why a trained hand-carry specialist is essential, not optional.

How long does international cryo shipping to or from Ghana take?

Most CML Ghana shipments complete within 24–72 hours of the collection appointment, depending on the route. UK-to-Ghana and Ghana-to-UK routes typically complete in under 48 hours. US-to-Ghana routes typically complete within 48–72 hours. CML always selects the fastest, most direct flight routing available. Our dry shipper dewars maintain safe cryogenic temperatures for 10–20 days — providing extensive protection against any delays or disruptions.

What happens if there is a flight delay or disruption?

Your Medical Logistics Technician remains with the specimens throughout any delay — in the terminal, at the gate, and on the rebooked service. CML operates contingency protocols including alternative routing and real-time temperature monitoring. The dewar's validated hold time provides substantial protection. You are kept informed throughout. A delay does not become a crisis when your specimens are under the direct supervision of a trained specialist.

Is the shipment insured and trackable?

Yes. CML provides real-time updates throughout the transport, with status communicated directly to the patient and both clinics. Specialist insurance coverage is available for additional peace of mind. Contact CML at the time of booking to confirm insurance options for your specific corridor.

What paperwork and legal documentation is required for Ghana?

Documentation requirements for Ghana shipments typically include: signed consent forms from all parties involved (donors, recipients, patients), clinic-to-clinic transfer authorisation letters, Ghana FDA biological specimen import/export declaration, IATA Packing Instruction 650 transport documentation, packing list specifying sample quantity and equipment details, and medical records confirming specimen identity and patient health status. For UK-origin shipments, an HFEA export licence is required. For US-origin shipments, FDA biomaterial import compliance applies. CML prepares and manages the entire documentation package.

Can sperm be transported between Ghana and another country for IVF?

Yes. Sperm can be safely shipped from Ghana to other countries for IVF treatment, and sperm samples from abroad can be shipped into Ghana at Accra, Tema, Kumasi, or other locations, subject to Ghana FDA import documentation and receiving clinic acceptance. CML manages the full logistics for both inbound and outbound sperm transport, including donor sperm from European sperm banks for patients undergoing treatment in Ghana.

Can multiple specimen types be shipped together?

Yes. Embryos, eggs, and sperm can be shipped together in the same dry shipper dewar if capacity allows and clinic protocols permit. CML will confirm whether combined transport is appropriate for your specific shipment during the initial consultation. Each specimen type is properly labelled, documented, and tracked throughout.

Can patients — not just clinics — book this service directly?

Yes. Both fertility clinics and individual patients can arrange shipments directly with CML. We coordinate with both the sending and receiving clinics on the patient's behalf, managing all documentation, clinic liaison, and logistics. Patients do not need to navigate the regulatory process independently — that is what CML is for.

What does the full shipping process involve?

The process involves: clinic coordination and consent form completion; Ghana FDA customs pre-clearance documentation; origin-country regulatory compliance (HFEA, FDA, or equivalent); dry shipper dewar preparation by the origin clinic embryology team; collection by the CML Medical Logistics Technician; supervised hand-carry transport; security screening coordination (manual inspection only); destination customs clearance; and formal handover to the receiving clinic with chain-of-custody documentation. CML manages every element of this process. Patients and clinics are kept informed at each stage.

How long can embryos remain frozen in storage in Ghana?

Embryos can remain frozen in cryogenic storage for many years using liquid nitrogen tanks at -196°C. Studies consistently show that embryos can remain viable for decades when stored under correct cryogenic conditions. The exact duration permitted by individual Ghanaian clinics may vary and depends on the clinic's storage agreement and applicable guidelines. Once you are ready to transfer your stored embryos — whether within Ghana or to an international destination — CML manages the transport.

What destinations does CML cover from Ghana?

CML ships globally from Ghana to over 80 countries, including the UK, USA, Europe (Germany, Spain, Greece, Czech Republic, Cyprus), the Middle East (UAE), Australia, Canada, and across Africa (Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and more). Contact us with your specific corridor for a regulatory assessment and tailored quotation.
