If you have frozen embryos or sperm stored at a fertility clinic in Nigeria and you need to move them to a different clinic, you are not alone and the process is more straightforward than most patients expect. Transferring reproductive material between clinics within Nigeria happens regularly — and when handled by a specialist, it is safe, legally compliant, and does not put your samples at risk.

What many patients do not realise is that you have the right to move your genetic material. It belongs to you. Your clinic cannot refuse a legitimate transfer request, and you do not need to restart your treatment from scratch simply because you want to change providers.

Why Patients Transfer Between Clinics in Nigeria

There are four situations that generate the majority of domestic transfers:

Switching to a higher-quality clinic is the most common. As Nigeria's fertility market matures, patients are becoming more informed about laboratory standards, embryologist experience, and success rates. A patient who started treatment at a smaller facility may want to continue at Bridge Clinic, Nordica, Lagoon Hospital, or another well-equipped centre in Lagos or Abuja.

Relocation is the second. Nigeria's fertility clinics are concentrated in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan. A patient who stored embryos in Abuja and has since moved to Lagos needs those embryos to follow them — not to remain indefinitely at a clinic they can no longer easily access.

Loss of confidence in the current provider is real and more common than patients openly discuss. If a cycle has failed and a patient believes the laboratory standards or clinical approach contributed to that outcome, moving to a different facility is a legitimate and sometimes medically justified decision.

Clinic closure or operational disruption occasionally forces transfers. Patients stored at a facility that closes, downsizes, or loses its operating licence need a reliable specialist to manage the move quickly and safely.

Is It Safe to Move Frozen Embryos and Sperm Within Nigeria?

Yes — when handled correctly. Cryogenically preserved embryos and sperm are highly stable at -196°C and can be transported without any loss of viability, provided the cold chain is maintained continuously from the moment of collection to handover at the receiving clinic.

The risk is not the journey itself — it is temperature. Any interruption to the cold chain, even a brief one, can cause irreversible damage that may not be visible until the point of thaw. This is why domestic transfers cannot be handled by a general courier, a taxi, or a clinic driver with a standard cooler box. They require a validated liquid nitrogen dry shipper and a trained specialist who understands the handling requirements.

Cryo Medical Logistics uses the same validated cryogenic equipment and specialist handling protocols for domestic Nigerian transfers as we use for our international shipments across 80 countries. The distance is shorter. The standard does not change.

The Process: How a Clinic-to-Clinic Transfer Works

The process is straightforward when managed by a specialist. Here is what happens when you book with Cryo Medical Logistics:

  1. You contact us and provide the details of your sending and receiving clinics.

  2. We reach out to both clinics directly to initiate the transfer paperwork, coordinate consent documentation, and confirm release authorisation from the sending facility.

  3. On the agreed date, our specialist collects your samples from the sending clinic in a validated liquid nitrogen dry shipper.

  4. Your material is transported directly to the receiving clinic — hand-carried, temperature-controlled, and under continuous supervision.

  5. We confirm chain of custody with the receiving clinic on delivery and provide you with written confirmation that your samples have been safely received.

You are kept informed at every stage. The entire process from confirmation to delivery typically takes three to seven days depending on clinic availability for paperwork and release scheduling.

Domestic Corridors We Cover

Cryo Medical Logistics handles clinic-to-clinic transfers across all major Nigerian fertility corridors including Lagos to Abuja, Abuja to Lagos, Lagos to Port Harcourt, Port Harcourt to Lagos, and same-city transfers within Lagos between clinics in Lekki, Victoria Island, Ikeja, and surrounding areas and more. If your transfer involves a city or clinic not listed here, contact our team directly — we cover the full country.

The Regulatory Picture

Nigeria does not yet have a federal ART law governing reproductive material transport, but fertility clinics in Lagos operate under HEFAMAA registration and inspection requirements, and equivalent oversight applies in other states. For domestic transfers, the key documentation is the clinic consent and release paperwork managed between the two facilities. Cryo Medical Logistics handles all of this coordination on your behalf — you do not need to manage the paperwork process between clinics yourself.

Transferring From Abroad Into Nigeria — or From Nigeria Abroad

If your embryos or sperm are stored at a clinic in the UK, USA, Australia, Europe, or the UAE and you want to use them at a Nigerian fertility clinic, that is a separate but connected service we also manage in full — including import permits, customs coordination, and compliance with Nigerian health authority requirements. Equally, if you are a Nigerian patient who wants to transfer material from Nigeria to a clinic abroad for treatment, we handle the export permits and international transport end to end. Contact our team to discuss your specific corridor.

Why Use a Specialist Rather Than Letting the Clinic Arrange It

Clinics frequently ask patients to source their own transport solution for inter-clinic transfers. Most patients then approach a general courier or ask a family member to carry the samples. Neither is appropriate for cryogenically preserved biological material. General couriers do not use validated cryogenic equipment. Family-carried transfers have no chain of custody documentation, no temperature monitoring, and no insurance — and many receiving clinics will not accept samples without proper transfer documentation.

Cryo Medical Logistics provides validated equipment, trained specialists, full chain of custody records, and insurance coverage for every transfer we handle. We are the only call you need to make.
