Fertility Preservation for the Military: Freezing Sperm and Eggs Before Deployment with Cryo Medical Logistics

Introduction
Military life does not always fit around family plans. Deployments, hazardous duty and long periods away from a partner can mean putting parenthood on hold, sometimes for years. Freezing sperm or eggs before you go gives you the option of having a family later, whatever your service brings.
From September 2026, it has also become more affordable for US service members. The Department of Defense has launched a three-year pilot that reimburses eligible active-duty personnel for freezing, storing and shipping sperm and eggs.
This guide explains who qualifies, what is covered, how to claim, and how to move your frozen samples safely between bases, clinics and countries. We are Cryo Medical Logistics, specialists in the supervised transport and storage of sperm, eggs and embryos, with an office in Houston and couriers serving 80+ countries.
TL;DR
Why freeze? Deployment, hazardous duty and long separations can delay family plans or put fertility at risk.
Is there military funding? Yes. The DoD's three-year fertility preservation pilot, launched September 2026, reimburses eligible active-duty members up to $500 a year for sperm and $10,000 a year for eggs.
What is covered? Retrieval, freezing, storage and shipping of your own sperm or eggs. Embryo creation and IVF are not covered.
Can I use a civilian clinic? Yes, including clinics outside the TRICARE network.
Can my samples be moved? Yes. We hand-carry frozen sperm and eggs between clinics, bases and countries at −196°C.

Why do service members freeze sperm or eggs?
Deployment and hazardous duty. Combat roles and dangerous assignments carry a risk of injury that could affect fertility.
Long separations. Months apart from a partner can delay trying for a baby.
Age. Egg quality and quantity decline with age, and sperm quality can decline too. Service can push family plans later.
Occupational exposures. Some roles involve heat, radiation, chemicals or other hazards. Talk to your medical officer about your own risks.
Peace of mind. A frozen sample means your partner can start treatment even while you are away.
What is the DoD fertility preservation pilot?
The Defense Health Agency's three-year Cryopreservation Demonstration Program, authorised by the 2025 National Defense Authorization Act, began in September 2026. It reimburses eligible active-duty service members for preserving their own sperm or eggs.
Who is eligible?
Active-duty members of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Space Force who are:
facing a combat deployment, or
on hazardous duty orders, or
geographically separated from their spouse or partner for at least six months because of military orders.
Your commander or their designee verifies eligibility using DHA Form 459.
How much does it reimburse?
Annual reimbursement cap
Sperm cryopreservation | Up to $500 a year |
Egg cryopreservation | Up to $10,000 a year |
The one-year period starts from the first covered service you receive.
What does it cover?
Retrieval of sperm or eggs
Testing linked to preservation
Freezing
Storage
Shipping of your frozen samples
What does it not cover?
Creating embryos
IVF or other fertility treatment
Preserving a partner's sperm or eggs
Where can I have it done?
At a military medical treatment facility with a reproductive health programme, or at a civilian fertility clinic of your choice, including clinics outside the TRICARE network.
How do I claim?
Get your eligibility verified by your commander using DHA Form 459.
Have your sperm or eggs collected, frozen, stored or shipped.
Keep itemised invoices and proof of payment for every service.
Submit your reimbursement request, generally within 120 days of receiving the service.
After the pilot ends, you remain responsible for decisions and costs for continued storage and use of your samples.
Does TRICARE cover fertility preservation?
Outside the pilot, TRICARE does not generally cover elective sperm or egg freezing, IVF or IUI. The main exception is for active-duty members whose fertility has been affected by a serious or severe illness or injury during service. In those cases, fertility preservation and treatment may be covered through the Supplemental Health Care Program. Some military hospitals also offer fertility services at reduced cost. Proposals to expand TRICARE fertility coverage are being debated in Congress.
Sperm freezing, egg freezing or embryo freezing: which is right for you?
Sperm freezing | Egg freezing | Embryo freezing
Who | Male service members | Female service members | Couples |
Procedure | Simple sample, no medication | Hormone injections for about two weeks, then a short egg collection procedure | Egg collection plus IVF with partner or donor sperm |
Time needed | Can be done in a day | Around two to three weeks | Several weeks |
Covered by DoD pilot? | Yes, up to $500 a year | Yes, up to $10,000 a year | No |
Male service members: sperm freezing is quick, and one visit can be enough. Many men freeze several vials before deployment so their partner can have IUI or IVF while they are away.
Female service members: egg freezing needs more planning, because the stimulation cycle takes around two weeks. Start early, ideally well before your deployment date.
Can I collect sperm at home before deployment?
Yes. Our at-home sperm collection and long-term storage kit, available nationwide across the USA, lets you collect privately at home and send your sample to a laboratory for professional freezing and storage. It is ideal when you have limited leave or are based far from a fertility clinic.
What if I am stationed overseas?
Many service members are based in Europe, Asia or the Middle East. You may want to freeze sperm or eggs near your overseas base and store them back home, or send frozen sperm to your partner's clinic in the US. We move frozen samples between countries by supervised hand-carry, so you do not have to arrange it around your duties.
How much does fertility preservation cost?
Service | Indicative cost (USD) | DoD pilot reimbursement |
Sperm freezing and first year of storage | $735 | Up to $500 a year |
Egg freezing cycle including medication | $10,000–$18,000 | Up to $10,000 a year |
Annual storage | $1025 | Included within caps |
Shipping of frozen samples | Custom quote | Included within caps |
Ask every clinic and provider for itemised invoices, as you will need them to claim.
How are frozen sperm and eggs transported safely?
Military life means moving. You may freeze sperm at one base and need it at a clinic in another state, or send it from an overseas posting to your partner's clinic back home. Frozen sperm and eggs must stay at −196°C for the whole journey.
We only use supervised hand-carry transport. Your samples are never sent as unaccompanied cargo:
−196°C dry shippers, charged and checked before every journey.
Do Not X-Ray protocol at every airport checkpoint.
ISO 9001:2015 compliant quality management with full chain-of-custody records.
FCA-regulated insurance on every transport.
Itemised invoices to support your reimbursement claim.
Office in Houston, plus London, Lagos and Abuja, with couriers serving 80+ countries.
How does the transport process work?

Should I have fertility tests before freezing?
Yes. Male factors contribute to 40–50% of infertility cases, and a semen analysis shows whether your sample is suitable for freezing and how many vials you may need. Our sister company, London Diagnostics Clinic, offers semen analysis, sperm DNA fragmentation testing, hormone profiles and egg reserve (AMH) testing.
What if we need donor eggs, donor sperm or IVF medication later?
Our partner, Greenplace Healthcare, provides screened Caucasian and European donor eggs and sperm and ships IVF medication worldwide. We deliver donor material by supervised hand-carry.
