Ghana's fertility sector is transforming. World-class IVF clinics are opening across Accra and beyond. Ghanaian patients are accessing treatment internationally — in the UK, USA, Europe, and across Africa — and bringing their reproductive materials home. The diaspora is growing, the demand is real, and the question being asked more than ever before is this: how do you safely, legally, and professionally move embryos, eggs, sperm, or stem cells across international borders into or out of Ghana?

The answer is Cryo Medical Logistics.

With over 5,000 completed shipments, operations across 80+ countries, and offices in London, Lagos, and Houston — with Cancún opening shortly — CML is the worldwide leader in supervised cryogenic hand-carry transport of reproductive and biological materials. We are not a general freight company. We are not a logistics broker. We are a specialist service built around one mission: getting irreplaceable biological materials from one clinic to another, safely, compliantly, and without compromise.

Ghana Is One of West Africa's Most Exciting Fertility Markets — and One of the Most Regulated

Ghana's reproductive medicine landscape is growing at pace. Domestic fertility clinics are investing in infrastructure. International patients of Ghanaian heritage — particularly those based in the UK and USA — are seeking treatment either at home or abroad and need their reproductive materials transported accordingly. And increasingly, Ghanaian clinics are coordinating with international partners on embryo transfers, donor programmes, and oncofertility cases that require cross-border biological logistics.

But growth in demand does not mean simplicity in execution. Biological material entering or leaving Ghana falls under the regulatory oversight of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA Ghana) and the Ministry of Health. These frameworks exist to protect patients, protect genetic material, and ensure that every transfer of human tissue across Ghanaian borders meets the standards required by law.

Non-compliance is not a minor administrative inconvenience. It can mean seizure of material, destruction of embryos, and legal consequences that no patient or clinic should ever have to face. The global reproductive medicine community saw exactly what unregulated embryo transport looks like in May 2026, when an individual was arrested at Ercan Airport in northern Cyprus attempting to carry embryos across international borders without Ministry of Health authorisation, permits, or a legitimate chain of custody. That is what happens when the wrong hands carry the wrong materials without preparation.

CML exists so that never happens to your patients, your clinic, or your family.

What We Transport — and Why It Cannot Be Treated as Ordinary Freight

The materials CML transports are among the most biologically sensitive in existence:

  • Embryos — fertilised eggs created through IVF, typically frozen at the blastocyst stage

  • Oocytes (eggs) — vitrified eggs frozen for fertility preservation or donor programmes

  • Sperm — cryopreserved samples for IVF, IUI, or donor programmes

  • Stem cells — including cord blood and haematopoietic stem cells for transplantation

  • Ovarian and testicular tissue — for patients preserving fertility ahead of cancer treatment

None of these materials can be replaced. A failed shipment is not a recoverable situation. For many patients, what is inside that tank represents years of treatment, significant financial sacrifice, and their only remaining pathway to biological parenthood.

That reality shapes every decision we make.

The Science Behind Safe Transport: Cryogenic Integrity at -196°C

All reproductive materials CML transports are stored at -196°C in a state of deep cryopreservation. At this temperature, biological activity stops entirely. Cells do not age. Genetic material does not degrade.

The challenge of transport is maintaining that temperature without interruption — regardless of flight delays, airport security, customs inspections, or transit connections.

A temperature excursion, even briefly, can be catastrophic and irreversible.

CML couriers travel with specialist dry shipper dewars: vacuum-insulated vessels in which liquid nitrogen is absorbed into a porous matrix, maintaining cryogenic temperatures for ten days or more with no free liquid nitrogen. These units are fully IATA-compliant, suitable for the most complex multi-leg itineraries, and equipped with onboard data loggers that produce a complete, time-stamped record of storage conditions throughout transit.

Every unit is tested before every shipment. There are no exceptions.

Why Hand-Carry Is the Only Acceptable Standard for Ghana — and Everywhere Else

The most consequential decision in any international reproductive tissue transfer is whether to use supervised hand-carry or consign the material to cargo freight. CML operates exclusively on a hand-carry basis. Here is why that matters:

Factor

CML Supervised Hand-Carry

Standard Cargo Freight

Custody

A trained CML courier accompanies the material throughout the entire journey

Material passes through multiple unverified handlers

Temperature

Continuous monitoring; dry shipper maintains -196°C for 10+ days

Depends on packaging alone; no human intervention if conditions change

Regulatory compliance

CML prepares every permit, Ministry of Health approval, and customs document

Sender is responsible; errors result in seizure or destruction

Disruption response

Our courier manages delays and escalations in real time, backed by our 24/7 operations centre

Material sits in cargo holds with no human response

Chain of custody

Unbroken, auditable documentation from embryologist to embryologist

Fragmented; legal accountability unclear

Insurance

Full specialist cover for reproductive biological materials

Standard cargo insurance typically excludes reproductive tissue

Clinic handover

Delivered directly to a qualified embryologist at the destination

No equivalent standard

In several of the countries where CML operates, cargo shipment of human reproductive materials is prohibited outright. In Ghana and across West Africa, the regulatory landscape requires a level of precision and preparation that no general freight operator can provide. CML's team manages this on your behalf, from first contact to final handover.

CML's Ghana Regulatory Expertise: What Compliance Actually Looks Like

Getting reproductive material into or out of Ghana is not a matter of booking a flight and filling in a form. It requires advance engagement with the FDA Ghana and Ministry of Health, material-specific documentation, certified clinical records from the referring clinic, and customs clearance at the Ghanaian port of entry managed by someone who knows what they are doing.

CML's internal regulatory team does not use generic templates. Every shipment is assessed individually. We identify every permit and approval required for the specific materials, the specific origin country, any transit points, and the Ghanaian destination — and we prepare and submit all documentation in advance of departure.

Our West African expertise is built on years of operational experience across the region, anchored by our Lagos office and extended across the corridor to Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, and beyond. We understand what Ghanaian customs officials need to see. We know how to prepare documentation that clears without delay. And we have the relationships and on-the-ground knowledge to manage the unexpected when it arises.

Our Process: From Clinic Call to Clinic Delivery in Ghana

A CML shipment begins weeks before a courier lifts a tank.

  1. Regulatory Assessment — We identify every permit, approval, and certification required for your specific shipment: materials, origin, transit points, and Ghana destination.

  2. Documentation Preparation — We prepare and submit all required documentation, including import/export permits, chain of custody paperwork, clinical certificates, and customs declarations.

  3. Clinic Coordination — We work directly with the sending clinic's embryologist to confirm packaging, labelling, tank preparation, and handover. We confirm the receiving Ghanaian clinic is ready before the courier departs.

  4. Courier Deployment — A trained CML courier collects the material directly from the clinic, verifies the chain of custody documentation, and takes personal responsibility throughout the journey.

  5. Real-Time Monitoring — Temperature is monitored continuously. GPS tracking provides live location data. Our 24/7 operations team tracks every flight and is ready to manage disruptions instantly.

  6. Clinic Delivery and Handover — The material is delivered directly into the hands of a qualified embryologist at the destination clinic in Ghana. A final chain of custody document is signed. A complete documentation package is issued to the client.

ISO 9001:2015 Compiant: Independent Assurance of Our Standards

Cryo Medical Logistics is certified to ISO 9001:2015 — the internationally recognised gold standard for quality management systems. Our processes are subject to systematic documentation, internal audit, and independent external verification.

In a field where the consequences of failure are irreversible, that independent assurance is not a nice-to-have. It is the foundation of every relationship we build with clinics, patients, and regulatory authorities in Ghana and around the world.

Who We Serve in Ghana

CML supports the full spectrum of Ghana's reproductive medicine ecosystem:

  • Fertility clinics coordinating international embryo or oocyte transfers for their patients

  • Individual patients — including Ghanaian diaspora communities in the UK and USA — moving reproductive materials home to Ghana for treatment

  • International patients seeking treatment at Ghanaian clinics and requiring inbound transport from their home country

  • Surrogacy professionals managing cross-border arrangements involving Ghanaian parties

  • Oncofertility programmes transferring tissue for patients preserving fertility ahead of cancer treatment

  • Stem cell programmes moving biological material for life-saving procedures

The African fertility sector is one of the fastest-growing in the world. Ghana is at the centre of that growth. And CML is the logistics partner built to serve it.
