Uganda IVF: Cost, Laws & Embryo, Sperm, Egg Transport to and from Uganda

Introduction
Uganda's fertility sector is growing fast. Private IVF clinics in Kampala now treat Ugandan couples, the large Ugandan diaspora in the UK, USA and Europe, and patients from across East Africa. With that growth comes a growing need to move frozen embryos, sperm and eggs safely into and out of the country.
Cryo Medical Logistics leads this work. We hand-carry reproductive biomaterial to and from Uganda, delivering directly to the embryology team at the receiving clinic. Here is one of our cryogenic shippers, delivered to a fertility centre in Kampala.

Is IVF available in Uganda?
Yes. IVF, ICSI, egg freezing, embryo freezing and frozen embryo transfer are offered mainly by private clinics in Kampala. Uganda's health ministry estimates that 10–15% of couples in Uganda are affected by infertility, and demand for treatment is rising.
Country | IVF available? | Typical IVF cost per cycle (USD) |
Uganda | Yes, mainly Kampala | from $3000 |
Kenya | Yes, Nairobi and Mombasa | from $3000 |
Tanzania | Limited | from $2000 |
Rwanda | Limited | from $2000 |
South Africa | Yes, many clinics | from $4000 |
What are the IVF laws in Uganda?
Uganda does not yet have a law regulating IVF or other assisted reproduction. The Human Assisted Reproductive Technology Bill, 2023, tabled in Parliament by MP Sarah Opendi, would change that if passed. As drafted, it would:
license fertility centres, overseen by the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council;
regulate donation and storage of sperm, eggs and embryos;
limit access to treatment to a man and a woman facing infertility;
restrict surrogacy to people with medical reasons and set a minimum surrogate age of 18.
The Bill's second reading was postponed in February 2025.
What this means for transport: for now, imports and exports run through the receiving clinic's acceptance and customs clearance. Once the Bill becomes law, new licensing and storage rules may apply. We confirm current requirements before every shipment.
Sperm transport to and from Uganda
If a partner lives or works abroad, he can freeze sperm at a licensed clinic near him. We collect it in a −196°C dry shipper and hand-carry it to the Kampala clinic, so treatment can go ahead without him travelling on egg collection day. This is especially common for Ugandan couples where one partner works in the UK, the Gulf or the USA.
Embryo transport to and from Uganda
Couples who created embryos abroad often want them transferred at home in Uganda, close to family. Others start IVF in Kampala and later move their embryos to a clinic overseas. We collect your embryos, stay with them through every checkpoint, and hand them to the receiving embryologist.
Egg transport to and from Uganda
Frozen eggs, including imported donor eggs where the receiving clinic accepts them, can be shipped to Kampala and fertilised there.

Fertility testing with London Diagnostics Clinic
Male factors contribute to 40–50% of infertility cases, so both partners should be tested early. Our sister company, London Diagnostics Clinic, offers semen analysis, sperm DNA fragmentation testing, hormone profiles and genetic carrier screening.
Donor eggs, donor sperm and IVF medication with Greenplace Healthcare
Our partner, Greenplace Healthcare, provides screened Caucasian and European donor eggs and sperm and ships IVF medication worldwide. Your Kampala clinic must confirm in writing that it accepts imported donor material, and we check this for you. If the ART Bill becomes law, donation rules in Uganda may change.
