South Africa IVF: Cost, Laws & Embryo, Sperm, Egg Transport to and from South Africa

Introduction
South Africa has the most advanced fertility sector in Africa. Clinics in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban treat South Africans and patients from across the continent and the world, many of whom come for donor egg treatment. That makes South Africa one of the busiest countries in Africa for moving frozen embryos, sperm and eggs across borders.
Cryo Medical Logistics leads this work. We hand-carry reproductive biomaterial to and from South Africa, delivering directly to the embryology team at the receiving clinic. Here is one of our cryogenic shippers, delivered to a fertility clinic in South Africa.

It is a leading destination for donor egg treatment, attracting patients from across Africa and beyond.

What are the IVF laws in South Africa?
South Africa regulates assisted reproduction under the National Health Act, 2003 and its regulations on artificial fertilisation.
Treatment is available to married and unmarried couples, single women and same-sex couples.
Donor eggs and sperm are permitted. Donation is anonymous and donors may receive reasonable compensation, not payment for the gametes themselves.
Surrogacy is permitted only on an altruistic basis under the Children's Act, with a High Court order confirming the agreement before conception. At least one intended parent must be domiciled in South Africa.
Import and export of embryos, sperm and eggs require prior government approval and the agreement of both clinics.
What this means for transport: shipments into or out of South Africa take more planning than in many African countries. We coordinate with both clinics so the required approvals are in place before we fly.
How much does IVF cost in South Africa?
Costs are indicative ranges only and vary by clinic and individual needs. Unless stated, they exclude medication, testing, freezing, storage and transport.
Sperm transport to and from South Africa
We move frozen sperm into South Africa for patients whose partner has frozen sperm abroad, and out of South Africa for patients continuing treatment elsewhere. Donor sperm can also be moved where both clinics agree and the required approval is in place.
Embryo transport to and from South Africa
Many international patients create embryos in South Africa, often with donor eggs, and then need them taken home for transfer. Others move embryos into South Africa to continue treatment there. We collect your embryos, stay with them through every checkpoint, and hand them to the receiving embryologist.
Egg transport to and from South Africa
Frozen eggs, including donor eggs, can be shipped to or from South African clinics and fertilised at the receiving clinic.
